Department Information
All lessons are taught by the head of Music. In addition to timetabled lessons we offer private tuition on most instruments during the school day and after school and on Saturdays through Open2Music. We offer clubs at lunch time for enrichment and teach KS3 and KS4 Music . Students are able to take part in a variety of concerts throughout the year.
KS3 Overview
All key stage topics are taught in accordance with the new National Curriculum Music in England programmes of study which emphasises learning Music through listening, composing and performing along with increasing singing, notation and music technology skills through the study of Music from a variety of great musicians and genres.
Topics taught at KS3 include:
Year 7: Elements of Music, Keyboard Skills, Rhythms, Instruments of the Orchestra and Chinese Music, African Drumming
Year 8: Chords, Guitar Skill, Form and Structure, rhythms, Songs for Musicals, Blues and Indian Music
Year 9: Reggae, Guitar Skills 2, Film Music, Dance , Band Skills and Performance
Curriculum Journey
KS4 Overview
All key stage 4 students are taught through the Edexcel Music scheme of work. This is an excellent and varied syllabus which aims to educate young musicians in the 3 components of listening, composing and performing. This is done through study of 4 main areas which are:
● Instrumental Music 1700–1820
● Vocal Music
● Music for Stage and Screen
● Fusions.
