Department Information
We believe that every student should find mathematics meaningful, useful, and accessible. Our aim is to help all learners grow in confidence and ability, so they can use maths both in school and in everyday life. From budgeting money to understanding the world around them, we show students how maths plays a role in many aspects of life. Through engaging lessons that encourage curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving, we support each student in reaching their full academic potential and becoming confident users of mathematics beyond the classroom.
KS3 Overview
Key Stage 3 Mathsbuilds on the foundations laid in Year 6, helping students make the transition from primary to secondary mathematics with confidence. The focus is on deepening understanding, developing fluency, and introducing more complex concepts that prepare students for success in Key Stage 4 and beyond.
The KS3 Maths curriculum is designed to spiral upward—topics are revisited and extended over time, allowing students to strengthen their understanding and apply their knowledge in increasingly challenging contexts. This approach ensures that key concepts are securely embedded and that students are well-prepared for the demands of GCSE Maths.
KS3 Maths is not just about learning formulas—it’s about building the skills, curiosity, and confidence students need to tackle challenges creatively, logically, and independently. This strong foundation sets the stage for success at Key Stage 4 and opens up a wide range of future opportunities.
KS4 Overview
Key Stage 4 Maths is where students strengthen their problem-solving skills and develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts in preparation for the GCSE (9–1) qualification. This stage provides the essential building blocks for future academic study, vocational pathways, and real-world success. It is designed to provide a strong foundation for further academic and vocational study and for employment, giving students the appropriate mathematical skills, knowledge, and understanding to help them progress with confidence and purpose.
As part of our commitment to delivering a broad and balanced curriculum, we ensure that KS4 Maths not only meets the requirements set by the national curriculum, but also enriches and stimulates individual learning through engaging, real-life applications of mathematics.
There are also opportunities for students to take on leadership roles, helping them build confidence, communication, and teamwork—skills that are invaluable both inside and outside the classroom.
